The Right Question

Have you ever had a question pop into your brain unexpectedly? My life changed in an instant in the Spring of 2020 with a single question. I was taking my morning walk in the open space near our house. It was a chilly morning with birds singing and the sun peeking through the oak trees.

My mind was empty, just enjoying the scenery. And then the question came: what are you going to do? It stopped me in my tracks because it was a question I should have been agonizing over but I was not. Honestly, I had been operating on such a full schedule for so many years, I was actually enjoying escaping the rat race for a while.

I hope this does not sound insensitive. I realize the pandemic was brutal and difficult for so many. I was very fortunate of have a safe space to live and a walking trail nearby.

The question lingered for a brief moment in my brain and then, with no effort at all, the answer arrived. I want to start a coaching school.

Excitement coursed through my body. I immediately saw the synergistic opportunity a career coaching school could offer.

I could use my recently published book, Elevate Your Career: Live a Life You're Truly Proud Of, as a text. The Elevate Career Cycle model would be the foundation of the career coaching process. The Elevations career assessment would be the proprietary tool my students would master and my YouTube channel would be the DIY resource for my student's clients.

The thoughts tumbled into my brain, almost faster than I could keep track of them. The world had changed with the advent of a threatening illness that pulled people out of their cubicles and into their homes. Millions were re-evaluating their lives and their careers. The demand for career coaching would likely explode (as it has).

I also reflected on my biggest disappointment with my coaching school experience in the early 2000's. It was fun, but impractical. The coaching curriculum lacked a solid, proven methodology to deliver services and build a successful business. I would make sure each of my career coaching students had a step-by-step session model and ready to use forms. They would have the confidence to move into a job or self-employment. I would share all my lessons learned in my three decades of career coaching experience.

Yep, all of that clarity followed from one simple question. I had the answers inside of me. I just needed to listen.

Here is my question for you today: what do you want to do? Stay still for a moment. Don't edit your brilliance. If there is too much noise in your life, take a walk and let the answer come to you.
