The Ugly Truth(s) About Listed Jobs

Why is it a waste of time for you to use job boards to find a job or change careers? Here are a few ugly truths:

  • Job listings on major boards often receive hundreds or even thousands of applications, increasing your competition.
  • Job postings often remain listed long after the job is filled.
  • The listing can be vague or overblown, and you cannot determine the real opportunity.
  • Employers are not excited to see you, and the sea of other candidates flooding their applicant tracking system (ATS).
  • Employers often list a job to meet legal posting requirements but they already have someone in mind for the job.
  • You are very limited in your ability to sell yourself.

And, the list goes on.

The biggest ugly truth is the allure of job boards. It seems so much easier than taking a strategic approach. You spend hours hunting for listings, filling out applications, and customizing your resume. It feels like you are getting something done. But you are kidding yourself.

Granted, some people do get their job from a posted position. The research tells us this happens about 10% of the time. 90% of jobs are secured through strategic networking. Thus, you should minimize the time staring at your computer and get out/get involved.

I’m sorry to be a bit heartless, but it does not matter if networking is fun for you or difficult. It simply is the only way to access the best jobs. My number one piece of advice is this: let your curiosity drive you.

Identify the career field and industry that interests you by completing a solid career assessment and then go for it. Attend classes, interview people currently in the role, attend conferences, and volunteer. Any time you are in front of another human, you increase the chance you will uncover a career opportunity that fits you perfectly.

If this information can help a friend or family member who is in the middle of a job hunt, please share it. Being stuck in a long-haul job search is demoralizing. Let’s help as many people as possible employ their talents and regain their dignity.
