Your Values Are Your Superpower

About ten years ago I began a simple practice. Every morning as I rise from bed and swing my feet to the floor, I reflect on my top three personal values: meaningful work, helping others, and having fun.

My overall goal is to increase my awareness and experience of these three things in every part of my day. The impact has been substantial. Here is what I have learned:

  • I have to have my values posted so I see them periodically throughout the day. I have them listed as part of my e-mail signature line. This keeps them top of mind no matter what happens.
  • My personal values make the biggest impact when I am fearful, angry, or about to make an impulsive decision. With my values in mind, my emotions are checked and I proceed with integrity and strength.
  • I make my best decisions when my actions and mindset are filtered through my personal core values.

Finding the courage to step up to any challenge is the key to success in all aspects of life. I do not want to waste energy beating myself up about my fears and insecurities. I want to draw from a much deeper well of strength, namely my values.

I’m excited to also share a values-focused podcast that dropped this week. Check out the The Aspirant Podcast. Natasha Clawson interviewed me about How to Make Smarter Business Decisions by Tapping Into Your Values. Here is a link to learn more about how I use both my personal and professional values as my true north.
