Are You Settling?

How would things change for you if anything was possible? What do you dream about doing, but lack the confidence to do it?

Perhaps you feel stuck. You may be carrying the baggage of horrible bosses, overwhelming workloads, and mind-numbing jobs. Or, you’re just ready for something new.

Let me stop here and mention why you might not pursue your deepest desire. It’s not just fear of failure. It’s the fear of failing at something significant. Setting goals that feel achievable is smart, but it flirts with settling. It is a self-protective stance that limits your vision.

So, what can you do? Break down your aspirations into manageable steps without backing down on what you want.

Consider the following steps:

Learn About Yourself

It is hard to feel confident when you are motivated by external pressures or societal judgments. Take time to review your values, the things you get energy from doing, and your current interests. Even if you have taken every assessment on the planet, you may still need a current view.

Check the Stories You Are Telling Yourself

When you think about going after an audacious goal, what are you saying to yourself? Are you positive and encouraging? Or do you immediately put yourself down? Fact-check your thoughts and eliminate self-imposed barriers.

Ask for Help

Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Coaching, friendships, or interaction with a mentor can lead to improved outcomes, stronger relationships, and personal growth. Leverage the knowledge and support of others.

It is often said we should start with the end in mind. So, let’s do that! The number one regret of people near the end of their lives is: “I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” Think about that for a while.
