Messy and Magnificent

As you contemplate your career situation, you may long for change but don’t know where to begin. Perhaps you’d like to flip a switch and presto, you are in a fantastic new job. Deep down, you know it’s not that simple. So, you procrastinate.

The longer you stay, the more stuck you feel. So, let’s work through the stages you will encounter as you embark on your beautiful career emergence.

Stage One: Gestation

A period of self-reflection starts the process. You need to calm your emotions and develop a vision for your future. This may involve facing some difficult facts.

Such as:

  • You’ve been waiting for someone to leave, retire, or change.
  • You got trained/educated in a field you do not enjoy. The money and time you invested did not pay off.
  • You do not know what you want to do, and don’t know how to find out.

The only person you can influence and change is you. Start by taking the Elevations career assessment to determine who you are and the careers that match your talents. This will elevate your confidence and get you on a path aligned with your strengths. If you need support, hire a career coach.

Stage Two: Birth

Finding a career opportunity matching your vision is messy and beautiful. You might think it’s all about your resume, job postings, and your LinkedIn profile. It’s not—and never will be. Your best future is found through relationships.

Here’s why:

  • Only 7% of job hunters find a career opportunity through listed jobs.
  • People hire folks they know and like, even if they are not the most qualified.
  • You look like your past until you build a new network.

If you already have a broad network, great! If not, you need to establish one. Think about attending courses that will connect you with people in your target field. Seek informational interviews and attend conferences or local events. Get out there. Like birth, this might not be easy, but do it anyway.

Stage Three: Emergence

Once you have gotten your new job or started your new business, or whatever is next for you, there is an adjustment period. Give yourself some grace. Allow for some self-doubt, maybe a dose of impostor syndrome. You are human, give yourself a break. Over time, you will adjust to the new normal and thrive.

The path to your best future is winding and unpredictable. I know you don’t want to hear that. But it’s my job to help you stop wasting time with poor strategies or false hope. Gather your courage to live fully. What are you waiting for?
