Elevate Encouragement

Encouragement is more important than appreciation (while I need and value both). As I set challenging goals, and occasionally feel overwhelmed by the uphill climbs I face, there is nothing more helpful than a sincere vote of confidence from someone I trust.
Encouragement can also beat back doubts and exhaustion. Every day you have a quotient of energy to expend. In the absence of encouragement, your energy becomes depleted. The inevitable frustrations and roadblocks become insurmountable. Unfortunately, over time you might give up.
I share this with you today to give you a chance to reflect on how you experienced encouragement in your life/career. Do you have an abundance of encouragement or are you living/working in a vacuum, with only your inner strength to help you power through?
If you could use a dose of ongoing encouragement, consider the following ideas:
- Join a self-help-oriented group. I’ve done this over the past year participating in a WomenSpeak group. I’m sharpening my public speaking skills but also getting abundant encouragement to help me pursue my goals.
- Schedule time to talk to the most encouraging person you know. I also do this. I can’t wait for my Sunday morning chat with my long-standing friend who always has my back.
- Pay attention to your self-talk. Words of encouragement also need to come from you. Limit self-criticism. Notice when you do something right. If you are your own worst enemy, it’s going to be tough to reach your potential.
Volumes have been written about the importance of appreciation and recognition. I think we should give equal attention to the power of encouragement.
