How to Start Researching Career Options

Spending hours scanning listings on job boards can be overwhelming and discouraging. Many job seekers load an unfocused resume into the online listing service and start randomly scanning postings. It's time consuming and can be soul crushing.

I'd like to share an alternative strategy I use regularly with my career coaching clients. The first step is a 90-minute interview where I learn everything I can about my client's career path to date, their interests, experiences, dreams, family history etc. This is called the first level of validation. Simply put, it's what the client already knows about themselves.

Next, the client completes the Elevations Career Assessment prioritizing values preferences, enjoyable skills, career related interests and temperament. This powerful platform adds clarity and a holistic picture of the client's career trajectory. This is the second level of validation.

At this point we have reached the bridge. The client needs to research their options based on their assessment results. One might logically ask, "where do I start?” For me the answer is Indeed.

Let me explain by sharing a breakthrough for one of my clients this week. She has an MBA, extensive media and film production experience, a passion for environmental advocacy and a love of science.

In preparation for our session, I jumped onto Indeed and searched for a couple of titles like Environmental Activist, Media Director and Environmental Communications. A posting appeared for the Natural Resources Defense Council. It was perfect.

I sent the job listing to my client several hours before our session. She got back to me quickly. She was excited and amazed. Seeing a real opportunity that matches so beautifully with her aspirations was magical. It gave her the focus, clarity and confidence to believe there was a fit for her in the job market.

This listing now becomes the source document for updating her resume, her LinkedIn profile and her strategy going forward. She can begin researching environmental advocacy organizations with a focus on media and communications. She will spend about 10% of her time responding to listed jobs and 90% of her time networking and proactively approaching potential employers. Now she is in charge of her future.
