According to a study published July, 2022 by McKinsey Quarterly, several trends are staggering:
· 40% of workers are planning to quit. Two out of five employees are thinking about leaving their job in the next three to six months.
· The voluntary quit rate is 25 percent higher than prepandemic levels. At the current and projected pace of hiring, quitting and job creation, openings likely won't return to normal levels for some time.
Obviously, this creates a huge challenge for employers seeking to recruit and retain employees. On the other side of the coin is the opportunity this rare labor market can offer you.
Getting crystal clear about your goals and what matters most is the first step to take before you enter your boss’s office or Zoom box and say goodbye. Additionally, understanding what employment culture and structure would be ideal is incredibly important.
Traditional Employees
If you are a "traditionalist" you are motivated to work full-time for large organizations in return for a competitive compensation package and perks, a good job title, status and career advancement. You might be holding on for a retirement package or are attracted to the security of an established employer.
According to the McKinsey study you are a hot commodity. Employers love your dependability, work ethic and stable track record. Prepare to be aggressive in your request for an attractive compensation package. Consider shifting to a new industry by focusing on your transferable skills. Leverage your long-standing network. Address any anxiety you have about making a change. You are in a buyers’ market.

The Do-It-Yourselfers
You will do just about anything for autonomy. Your top motivators are workplace flexibility, meaningful work and compensation. Likely employment options for you include non-traditional full-time employment, gig work or self-employment. Chances are, you already quit your job or lost your job during the pandemic. You think about going back to work but it seems stifling. Your best options will come through creative conversations with recruiters, hiring managers or strategic partners who do business with you or for you.
Come to the conversation with a clear vision and value proposition. Show how you can be a meaningful asset and a reliable resource without being stuck in a rigid job. You benefit from doing some serious dreaming and career designing. Ask for what you want, exactly. You can become the master of manifestation.
I do want to add a bit of reality to this rosy picture. Some of my clients are still having a tough time finding the right job, even with all the openings and opportunity. The pain point for some employers is not high enough yet and they are unwilling to offer the level of flexibility you want and deserve.
If you want to take a conservative approach, research your options though your personal and professional network. Plot your exit carefully. Every bit of strategic planning will pay off. You may look back on your post-pandemic career shift as the best decision you ever made.
